THE INDUSTRY IS SHORT
ON SKILLED TECHS.
EVERYONE FEELS IT.

The average HD vehicle on the road in 2025 is 12.8 years old. Newer trucks are more complex than the trucks that came before them. And the experienced techs who learned on the older platforms are retiring out of the workforce faster than new techs are coming in. The skills gap isn't theoretical. It's costing your shop money every week.

01

OUTDATED CURRICULUM

Trade schools are teaching trucks that don't exist anymore. By the time a new tech graduates, the engines they trained on are two emissions generations behind what's rolling into the bay. Most new techs need a year of on-the-job ramp before they can pull their weight.

02

NO TIME TO TRAIN

Pull a senior tech off the floor for a week of training and your shop loses thousands in billable hours. So nobody trains. Then a complex truck rolls in, and you're stuck calling the dealer and paying for a slot you can't get.

03

TURNOVER COSTS COMPOUND

Lose a trained tech, you don't just lose them — you lose the year of ramp it took to get them productive. Without a system for getting new hires productive fast, every departure is a six-figure setback to the shop's capacity.

A TRAINING PROGRAM BUILT BY THE TECHS WHO ACTUALLY DO THE WORK.

Diesel Training is the largest aftermarket diagnostic training program for diesel technicians in North America. It exists because the industry doesn't train its own people fast enough — and because the techs who do this work every day know better than anyone what new techs and shop owners actually need to learn.

The program runs on three engines. Diesel Laptops University (DLU) is our online training library — over 40 on-demand courses covering aftertreatment, electrical diagnostics, hydraulics, scan-tool operation, and more. Self-paced. Available 24/7. Take a module between jobs in the bay or finish a track in a weekend.

Our Classroom Training runs out of four facilities — Columbia SC, Chicago IL, Dallas TX, and Denver CO. Live, in-person, taught by experienced certified diesel technicians. The classroom format is where the most technically demanding skills get taught — Datalink troubleshooting, advanced electrical, specific OEM software platforms.

And our Field Training sends our trainers to your shop for hands-on instruction tied to your actual equipment. Especially valuable for fleets onboarding multiple techs at once. Whatever fits your schedule, your team's experience level, and your budget — there's a path that works.

WE WERE THE INDEPENDENT
ALTERNATIVE BEFORE IT WAS AN OPTION.

01

BUILT BY WORKING TECHS.

DLU courses and classroom curriculum are built by Diesel Laptops' internal SMEs — actual diesel technicians, support specialists, and product leaders — plus trusted industry partners. Not academic theorists. People who turn wrenches.

02

BILINGUAL FROM THE START.

Aftertreatment, Electrical Diagnostics, ABS, Datalink troubleshooting, Cojali Jaltest, and more — all available in Spanish, online and in our Dallas and Denver classrooms. Language shouldn't be the barrier between a tech and a fix.

03

FIVE FORMATS, ONE PROGRAM.

Free webinars. Self-paced online. Live classroom in four cities. Field training at your shop. Three membership tiers. Pick the format that fits the team — or stack them, the way most of our customers do.

04

TIED TO THE TOOLS YOU OWN.

Most aftermarket training is brand-agnostic. Ours covers the platforms your shop actually runs — Cummins INSITE, Detroit DDDL, Cojali Jaltest, TEXA. Walk out of a course and apply it in your bay the same week.

★★★★★

Took the Aftertreatment class in Columbia and walked out actually understanding what's happening inside the SCR system instead of just swapping parts. Came back to the shop and diagnosed a regen issue the same week that I would have sent out before.

I run DLU subscriptions for all my techs. The newer guys hit it hard the first six months and I can see the difference in their write-ups. Best money I spend on professional development — way better than sending one guy off to a single training a year.

The Datalink troubleshooting class is worth the trip alone. I've been a tech for fifteen years and I still picked up things I didn't know. Instructor was sharp, hands-on portion was real-world, and the classroom setup let everyone work through it.

IS TRAINING REALLY FREE WITH MASTER SERIES?

+

Yes. Master Series Shop unlocks the entire DLU online catalog and free classroom seats for every tech in your shop — at any of our four US locations. Master Series Solo unlocks the entire DLU online catalog free for the named user (classroom seats are not included with Solo, but Solo holders can attend classroom courses at the standard rate). Either way, training is bundled into the Master Series subscription — there's no separate fee, no per-course charges, no seat caps.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SHOP AND SOLO FOR TRAINING?

+

Master Series Shop covers your whole crew: every tech in your shop gets unlimited DLU online access plus free classroom seats. Master Series Solo is for the individual working tech — unlimited DLU online for the named user, but no included classroom seats. If you're a single tech, Solo is the right fit. If you employ multiple techs and want to standardize their skill development, Shop is dramatically better economics.

DO I NEED TO OWN A DIAGNOSTIC TOOL TO TAKE THE TRAINING?

+

No. You can take any course — DLU online, classroom, or field — without owning diagnostic hardware. That said, pairing the training with a Diesel Laptops tool reinforces what you learn and makes hands-on application easier. Many of our customers buy their first kit after taking a Diagnostics 101 class and seeing where the tool fits in the workflow.

HOW LONG DO ONLINE COURSES TAKE?

+

Course length varies. Most modules are designed for short, focused sessions — you can complete one between jobs in the bay or knock out a full track over a weekend. The total DLU library has over 80 hours of content, but you don't take it all at once. Pick what's relevant to what you're working on right now.

HOW MUCH DOES CLASSROOM TRAINING COST IF I'M NOT ON MASTER SERIES?

+

Most full-day classroom courses are $499 per student. Half-day software classes (like Cojali Jaltest in-person) start at $199. Pricing is the same across all four cities — Columbia, Chicago, Dallas, and Denver. If you're going to send more than two or three techs to classroom training in a year, Master Series Shop pays for itself fast — every classroom seat after that is free.

WHAT'S OFFERED IN SPANISH?

+

A lot. Aftertreatment & Emissions, Electrical Diagnostics, ABS Diagnostics, HVAC Diagnostics, Datalink troubleshooting, Diagnostics 101, and Cojali Jaltest are all offered in Spanish — both online via DLU and in-person at our Dallas and Denver classrooms. We continue to expand the Spanish-language catalog because the demand is real and the bilingual diesel workforce is growing.

WHAT IS FIELD TRAINING?

+

Field training is when our certified instructors come to your shop and teach a class on-site, on your equipment, with your team. Especially valuable for fleets and multi-bay operations onboarding multiple techs at once — you don't have to pull people off the schedule and ship them to one of our cities. Field training is priced separately from Master Series and is typically scoped based on curriculum, group size, and duration. Talk to our team to scope it.

WHO BUILDS THE COURSES?

+

Working diesel technicians, support specialists, and product leaders inside Diesel Laptops, plus trusted third-party industry partners (like Lite-Check, Horton, Donaldson, Enersys, and Vanair). The curriculum is reviewed and updated continuously to keep up with new platforms and emissions generations. Not academic theorists. People who do this work.

WHEN ARE THE FREE WEBINARS?

+

Every Wednesday. Topics rotate weekly — recent ones have covered fault code workflows, diagnostic software updates, aftertreatment troubleshooting, and tool-specific deep dives. They're free, signup is on the training site, and they're a low-risk way to test whether our training style fits how your team learns.

WHAT IF I'M NOT SURE WHERE TO START?

+

Talk to our team before you sign up for anything. We'll ask about your team's experience level, the equipment you work on, and the kinds of repairs you handle most often, then recommend the smallest training path that fills the actual gaps. If a free webinar covers what you need, we'll tell you to take that instead of paying for a course.
